I finally finished it. Whew! It didn't take me so long because it was unpleasant. Quite the contrary: I read it slowly and carefully, savoring each delicious word. It took so long because I wanted to read it when I would have time to devote a big chunk of time to it without interruption. I actually read it in only 3 sittings.

Although it was hard to put down, it was easy to not come back to as it takes a lot of mental energy to read. That sounds wrong, though... It's not convoluted or difficult,

Wow. A fascinating read for anyone interested in gender identification, trans-gender biographies, and queer history. An utterly skillful and deeply frank study of Cal, gender biased to be raised as a girl from infancy, and the discovery and self actualization of himself as a male.

The title is both how Calliope/ Callie/ Cal thinks of himself and the name of the home he grows up in Gross Pointe, MI. Callie is genetically a boy raised as a girl until she’s 14 and diagnosed. His doctor recommends surgery and Cal runs away. (Yes I know I'm switching the sex of the pronoun with each sentence.)
