Wow. This was so excellent! A very quick read too. Alice Walker tells her story solely through journal entries (addressed "Dear God") and letters between two separated sisters. What a beautiful voice! I will definitely need to read this again, to appreciate the luscious language. This novel is almost like poetry! Every small chapter is very full with content.

Note that the movie, which I have alwasy loved and was VERY familiar with, does not follow the plot EXACTLY. But I feel that I understand ...more

I read this before I saw the movie when it first came out (wikipedia tells me that it was 1985!). It was good, definitely outside my somewhat sheltered world at the time. I should probably reread this in light of the rest of my life.
