This book is both a personal story written by Rebecca Skloot about meeting and getting to know the Lacks family and their history, as well as a historical account of the HeLa cells and ethical violations in the name of scientific research. I feel like we got to know the Lacks family and their trials and tribulations, which helped to make the history of ethics in research (and the HeLa cells themselves) a much more personal and poignant story.
