I read this book in March along with Alicia @ A Kernel of Nonsense for a read-a-long we did. It as so much fun! I really enjoyed being able to talk about this book as I was reading it.

I really did enjoy this book -hence the 4 stars I gave it. However, I do think that this book is sometimes promoted wrongly. Let’s be honest and say that this is just an adult romance book -the time travel is kind of pushed to the side. It focuses a lot more on the romance. Not tha Originally at The Fictional Reader

I really did enjoy this book -hence the 4 stars I gave it. However, I do think that this book is sometimes promoted wrongly. Let’s be honest and say that this is just an adult romance book -the time travel is kind of pushed to the side. It focuses a lot more on the romance. Not that there is anything wrong with that at all! You just have to know what to expect.

What did I enjoy about this book? A lot. First off, the setting. I mean, all I want to do now is travel through the Highlands with a backpack -and I don’t think of myself as a backpacking kind of person. I liked the characters as well -hello Jamie Fraser! And of course, the storyline. This book is quite long so the story encompasses quite an amount of time and happenings, but I didn’t really feel bored. There was always something catching my interest, whether it was a place, a new character or an exciting twist.

What didn’t I like as much? The first 50 pages were a bit hard for me to get through. I felt like nothing was happening and I was just sitting there waiting for the time travel to happen. Once that did though, it really took off for me. The other aspect of the book I had a bit of trouble with it the obvious culture differences between the 1700s and our modern age. Women are viewed as incapable of doing anything -unless they are a witch and therefore killed- and are treated despicably sometimes. There were certain scenes where I was SO ANGRY at Jamie and I couldn’t understand why Claire would forgive him. But then again, that is what happened in that time so I guess that just makes the book more authentic?

Overall, I really did enjoy this book. I would say though if you are younger and uncomfortable with sex scenes and graphic descriptions -of anything- then this is definitely not a book for you.
