I really enjoyed this steamy love story, which is set in modern day NY and has a rom com feel in parts as it's romantic and fairly predicable.
Despite being a little dark in places, it felt light overall and I was smiling from ear to ear throughout the majority of the book. Eva and Shane are two talented writers, equally accomplished and both part of a vibrant arty scene. They are both really interesting, sexy and likeable although Shane does seem like he's going to be a lot of work. Eva's health problems add another unique layer to the story and I liked that she came to live in her truth by the end of the book, choosing to stop hiding her illness and be open with her peers.

I really enjoyed how unapologetically black the story, the characters and the dialogue were. I also enjoyed the beautiful relationship between Eva and her daughter, and the friendship between Eva and her girls. I also appreciated the many examples of black love in the story, all the happily married couples and even the positive co parenting situation Eva and her ex had set up. There are however many layers to this story as both Eva and Shane had very traumatic childhoods, and I'm not sure the extreme nature of their history together was entirely necessary for the story. This said Eva's family history and the story she hopes to write sounds fascinating and perhaps Tia will decide to write this as a prequel to 7 days in June.

Despite this being a romance novel there are many important issues that are raised throughout the book, which felt totally natural as these are the conversations that young black professionals are having and this made the story feel authentic.

Mella Lee narrates the audio perfectly, switching between accents and capturing the cute youthfulness of Audrey and the southern drawl of Eva's mother and aunt really well, she is a talented actress.

I would have given this book 5 stars but I took issue with some of the triggers in the story, which in my opinion were out of place and quite unnecessary. ...more
