Cinder (The Lunar Chronicles, #1) in Better Read Than Dead Book Club

What an amazing, solid 4-star read! Cinder is a very unique retelling of the classic fairy-tale story of Cinderella with a futuristic sci-fi twist. In my opinion, this was an excellent set-up for the remainder of the Lunar Chronicles series and I am incredibly excited to continue on to the next book!

Cinder is a cyborg. At first, the thought of this really turned me off. However, once I actually picked up the book and started reading, the fact that she is a cyborg turned out to be one of my favor What an amazing, solid 4-star read! Cinder is a cyborg. At first, the thought of this really turned me off. However, once I actually picked up the book and started reading, the fact that she is a cyborg turned out to be one of my favorite aspects of this book! Cinder is so much more human than I expected, but with extra added special characteristics because of her cyborg qualities. The blinking light that informed her when people were lying was seriously so awesome!

The rest of the characters in this story were enjoyable as well. Prince Kai is still a bit mysterious to me, but I look forward to seeing more of him in the future books. Peony and Iko were also incredibly lovable and added wonderful friendships to the story, which I always appreciate greatly. Queen Levana is EVIL. Enough said.

The world building was also excellent in this book. Because it was the first book and this world is SO different from our normal world, I think this was essential and Marissa Meyer did a great job here. I feel like I understand the world very well and will feel very comfortable going in to the next books because of this. I love the Asian setting... so lovely!

The plot of this book was a bit slow, which is the major reason why I had to give this book 4 stars. I found myself wondering what the hype was about at certain points throughout the point just because nothing seemed to be happening. I was expecting a bit more action, but am hoping we get this in future books. Also, the "twist" at the end was pretty obvious. If I can guess it (I am terrible at predicting plot twists), then it most definitely wasn't a shocker to most people.

The writing-style for this book was incredibly easy to read, quick, and addictive. I also really enjoyed the short chapters - for some reason, I always feel like I am reading faster when the chapters are shorter (I am a slow reader so this is great).

Overall, I definitely enjoyed this book! Between the endearing characters and the fantastic futuristic world that was set-up very clearly from the start of the book, I knew I would love this story from the moment I finished the first chapter. Also, who doesn't love a great fairy-fale retelling?

I liked the story and the writing style of the author. The way she tweaked the fairy tale was good. It wasn't a "WOW" book but it's quite promising for the rest of the series.

I heard a lot of people talk about the lunar chronicles series saying that it gets better and better with each book. So, I'm really hoping for that !

I'm planning on completing the lunar chronicles this year ;) ...more
