I initially picked The Mothers up last spring after loving The Vanishing Half and wanted to read more by author Brit Bennett. But then the pandemic hit and I don’t know where my mood reading went, but I set this down in favor of a few lighter reads.
Fast forward a few months and I picked it right back up, and once again loved Bennett’s writing.

This is one of the best books I’ve read this year and one of the best debuts I’ve ever read. There is something about this story that is so relatable even though I have not found myself in any of these situations. Brit Bennett’s writing is so beautiful and authentic to each of the characters.
The story is mostly about Nadia, who is a grief stricken teenager who finds herself pregnant with the local pastor’s son, Luke. The story follows the relationships of Nadia, Luke, and Aubrey (Nadia’s best f ...more

Really enjoyed this. It wasn't a perfect book, but I'll be on the lookout for Brit Bennett's other stuff. I think she has potential to be a favorite contemporary fiction author. I really felt like I got to know the characters and she did a nice job tackling tough subjects like suicide, abortion, sexual abuse, and grief.

Brit Bennett has become one of my favorite writers! This books started out slow but picked up quick!
I really enjoy Bennett’s exploration of female relationships. Nadia and Aubrey were best friends, but very much opposite from one another. They each struggle with the societal perceptions of the choices they’ve made. I thought it was interesting Bennett was able to show that no matter the choices women make in life, especially black women, they are still judged harshly.

This book was haunting in a way that it will stick with me for years to come. I loved how Bennett deeply explored the strings that bind humans together, the ramifications of choices, the agony of such choices and the inner connectedness of the world. Loved this book, cannot wait to read more by the author.
