The story begins in 1939 in Krakow, Poland, a ten year old Jewish boy named Yanek Gruener who loved being near his aunts, uncles, cousins, and parents didn’t know what they were getting into. As World War 2 starts the French, British, American, and German soldiers fought the war in the West; Germans took over Jewish cities and put every Jew in a concentration camp. The story begins in 1939 in Krakow, Poland, a ten year old Jewish boy named Yanek Gruener who loved being near his aunts, uncles, cousins, and parents didn’t know what they were getting into. As World War 2 starts the French, British, American, and German soldiers fought the war in the West; Germans took over Jewish cities and put every Jew in a concentration camp. If people couldn’t work, they would kill them with anything the Germans had; if people could work, they would feed them not even a half of a loaf of bread and some watery soup once a day. The Germans killed Yanek’s relatives. He was the only one left out of his family. He survived ten different concentration camps and survived every one of them.
He had the nerve to ask one of the SS officers (Moon Face), the one who beat him in Sachsenhausen concentration camp for a loaf of bread before he dies of starvation. SS officers were convicted murderers before the war began. The Germans made them into SS officers because German troops were at war; they didn’t have anyone else to put them into SS officers.
After the death march to Dachau concentration camp the first day, Yanek got there. The guy next to him got camp fever and the Germans killed people who get sick and go see the doctor. Bombs went off late one night, waking everyone up the next morning. They didn’t have role call or work time at all. The next day no one was in the camp at all, no sight of any SS officer or any Germans. They snuck out that night, and all the prisoners went out of the barracks into the yard. As they stood there looking at the gates of the camp thinking about walking out of the camp, there was know where else to go. Yanek can’t go back to Krakow ghetto because there’s no one there anymore. There were soldiers coming in the gate. Some people ran to go back into the barracks to hide, and others stood there looking at who was coming in the front gates. The gates opened and it was the Americans with a tank following behind that was the end of the war and the Holocaust.

This book is about a 10 year old boy who is stuck in WW2 and being a Jew. The main character, Yanek Gruener, has to learn how to live through 10 concentration camps without any help from anyone. He also has to decide if wants to survive by himself or help the people in the camps with him. The positives of the book were that it was very detailed about how the prisoners were treated and did a very good job on expressing the main characters emotions throughout the book.
