Shelves: own-physical, fantasy

This book had a really cool concept. Not one that is unheard of, but simply well plot. Laini Taylor is an expert in creating the most vivid creatures come to life. Although I did have some issues while imagining some of the characters and elsewhere I thought it is a great start to the trilogy and that it can be explored more in the next installments.
Since Karou was such a badass female protagonist who stood for herself and what she held dear and true, I enjoyed her perspective in the story. Al This book had a really cool concept. Since Karou was such a badass female protagonist who stood for herself and what she held dear and true, I enjoyed her perspective in the story. Although the blissful ignorance that she was living in was unsettling. The first thoughts in my mind were the questions she had never pondered upon before and it just felt too weird that she hadn't been curious enough to find out the truth.
Akiva, was the freaking Sun himself. He had fiery eyes like the sun and the strength and power and beauty. Combined into one? Perfection.
I did find it weird that he for no apparent reason did what he did when he first met Karou, but then again after the truth unraveled I sort of found it okay to leave it be.
The relationships portrayed in the book are full of lies and secrets but full of love and affection. Brimstone and Karou, Karou and Zuzana, Karou and Akiva.
All of them had certain aspects which were different in a way.
Brimstone was more of a father-figure to Karou, a strict distant one nevertheless.
Zuzana took all of it pretty well, I've got to admit it. She stuck around for her best friend and that's exactly how it should be. I related to her a lot, although not as much as Karou.
Akiva had his pros and cons. I didn't know if he could be trusted or not. If he really was the enemy or Brimstone and the gang were. So I was very conflicted about him.
Karou was this image of a girl who wanted to be different, who wanted a family, who wanted friends over solitude but didn't have many. The loneliness and the pain she was in was shown a bit later in the book. At first she just appeared normal who made dumb choices and had weird wishes and fantasies.
Her character developed a lot throughout the book, which was a good sign of expecting the same in the other books.
I kinda sorta guessed the plot twist incorrectly, but I was VERY VERY close to the real one! I did NOT see that coming! Brimstone turned out to be so different.. his work made sense and so did Karou's past. But it was this fantastical element that I couldn't have guessed.

I did like the book, but there were parts where I skim read and was just bored. So that's the reason behind the 4 stars.
I cannot wait to read the second book to see what happens next! ...more

The following review is spoiler-free.
I just have a few things to say:

1) The writing in this book is incredibly great. Even if you don't want to read this book, you should read a few chapters just to experience the writing.

2) The plot is very original and well thought-out.

2a) However, there is a section of MORE THAN THIRTEEN WHOLE CHAPTERS that are purely flashback. But, they also skip around in time. For example:

Embora a parte final , no meu ponto de vista, tenha ficado um pouco mais lenta não deixou de me agradar. Foi um livro que me cativou desde o primeiro capitulo :D
