3.5 ⭐️ rounded up!! Reread 2024!! I decided to reread the book after reading The Assassins Blade. I think reading that one did increase my enjoyment a little bit. The first time I read this I liked it but it didn’t live up to the hype for me. I do think the series gets a lot better but just this first one isn’t the best. I gave this one 3 stars the first time I read it but I’m bumping it up 1/2 a star this time. I definitely recommended reading the assassins blade first. I’m excited to continue ...more

Shelves: favorite, fantasy

5/5 stars and no doubt about it. This was probably one of the best books I have read this year, and it went straight to my favorites shelf. Celaena was everything I want in a character, her sass made this book perfect!
So yeah, I really loved this book!!

In spite of the fact that this book has been hyped up to impossible standards, I went into reading it knowing very little about it. I knew two things: the main girl was an assassin and she was battling it out with a bunch of other potential champions in a glass castle.

This book is SO much more than that.

Things I liked:
-Celaena: Initially, to be quite honest, I had a lot of reservations. Why on earth is this supposedly kick-butt assassin so obsessed with boys and clothing and staring at herse In spite of the fact that this book has been hyped up to impossible standards, I went into reading it knowing very little about it. I knew two things: the main girl was an assassin and she was battling it out with a bunch of other potential champions in a glass castle.

This book is SO much more than that.

Things I liked:
-Celaena: Initially, to be quite honest, I had a lot of reservations. Why on earth is this supposedly kick-butt assassin so obsessed with boys and clothing and staring at herself in the mirror? However, as the story went on, I found myself appreciating the fact that, while she is a fierce fighter, she’s also so completely able to embrace her more feminine side. She’s the most feared and notorious assassin in the land, but she also likes to dress up and feel pretty when she can. And there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that!

-Multiple points of view: Something that Sarah J. Maas does in this story that I absolutely love (if I could underline this 3 times, I probably would), is to allow multiple characters the chance to have their viewpoints shared in the same chapter. Instead of giving all of the characters individual chapters, she would occasionally give them a few paragraphs in between Celaena’s. I’m not sure that I’m explaining that well at all, but…it’s fantastic! It was just enough to allow us the opportunity to get insight on the other characters’ personalities without completely halting Celaena’s storyline.

-World-Building: Sarah J. Maas, in this book at least, is an expert world-builder. In fact, I feel like this book was specifically written just to build the world and set the stage for the following books. She had a fantastic way of laying out at least a partial history of many of the settings and characters.

Things I didn’t like:
-As I just said in my ‘world-building’ section, I feel like this book was just put together to set the stage for the next books. I went into this book expecting so much more actual action than I got. While there was action in the latter part of the books, I honestly had a hard time focusing on some sections because there was so much time spent on just stumbling upon things or Celaena walking around various parts of the castle/gardens with various people.

-The challenges: When I went into this book, I thought the entire book was going to focus on an intense championship between all of these competitors. While it did focus on the championship, the challenges were not even remotely what I was expecting. Most of the time we got something along the lines of “another challenge passed and I was safe, but so-and-so went home.” Had I had different expectations, I probably would be fine with that. Unfortunately, that isn’t the case.

Although this book really isn’t a full five stars for me, it’s easily a four-star read because of the characters, world-building, and Sarah J. Maas’ writing style. I'm definitely picking up the second book this week, and I would strongly recommend this one!

I am very sad to say I did not enjoy this book nearly as much as I had hoped I would. I will continue to read the series as it get s TONS of praise but I will go into it with far lower expectations than I did with this one.

I felt as though it took FOREVER to get started - it was so slow. I was not even excited to read till I was over half way through the novel. I felt that the love interest were unneeded and tiresome! I was very happy at the end when she finally cut the Prince lose! COULD NOT S ...more

“Throne of Glass” by Sarah J. Maas is a fantastic book. It evoked many emotions from me and kept me flipping pages through the night and into the morning.

I legitimately cannot decide which male member of the love triangle I would prefer Celaena to end up with. I ship Celaena and Chaol just as much as I ship her with Dorian.

SO COOL.
Can we just talk about those characters please?!? They're all awesome but they're all different and distinguishable which I loved!!
Lots of cool action and it feels like this series is gonna be epic!
4.5/5 stars - would definitely recommend if the premise interests you! :)
