NO ONE WARNED ME I WOULD FEEL SO MANY FEELS WHILE READING THIS BOOK uuggggghhhhh!!!!!!! I'm definitely going to jump right into the second book right away! This was such a rollercoaster of a story!

I really wasn't sure how I would feel about this book before I got into it, but it turned out to be fast-paced, intriguing and action packed.

So, some of the things I enjoyed most about this book were:
~The characters. I really enjoyed all of the main POVs and thought they were all fairly well-developed for a first book but there was also still some intrigue left into who they (More like 4.75 stars because of slight flaws discussed later in the review) :)

I really wasn't sure how I would feel about this book before I got into it, but it turned out to be fast-paced, intriguing and action packed.

So, some of the things I enjoyed most about this book were:
~The characters. I really enjoyed all of the main POVs and thought they were all fairly well-developed for a first book but there was also still some intrigue left into who they really were.
~The friendship between Lia and Pauline. It was so refreshing to read about these two characters' friendship which is strong and steadfast throughout the book. I also loved that this book avoided the female-character-who-never-gets-on-with-any-other-girls stereotype which seems to be very popular at the moment.
~The relationship between Lia and her siblings. Again, it was refreshing to read a story where the siblings get on well together and are super supportive of each other.
~The different perspectives. I loved that we had perspectives from Lia, Rafe, Kaden, the Assassin and the Prince (plus a tiny bit from Pauline). I thought this was great because it meant that we only know as much as Mary E Pearson wanted us to know but we do know some of the inner thoughts and feelings of all the characters. For me I loved the way this meant that there was that "OH I GET IT!" moment when things finally start to fit together.
~The ending. Not too cliff-hanger-y but also made me want to buy the second book right this minute. Also- we had some interesting things crop up that I hope we dive into even more in the next one...
~No distinct "goodies" and "baddies". We think we know, then we change our mind... We're pretty sure we've nailed it, then they do that. Always kept guessing and forever questioning morals/actions.

Although I've only praised this book so far there was one thing in particular that I wasn't so crazy about.
~The whole male characters having "mysteries hidden behind their eyes" thing. Ok, I get it, I get that it's intriguing and whatever and I'm totally cool with descriptions like that once or twice but not all the time...! (Of course, this is only a little snag and is easy to get over but still- it can get annoying after a while.)

The only other thing I would like to address is the "love triangle" that has been said by so many to be in this book. Whilst I totally understand that this book does definitely have a love triangle of some sorts, it's very different to other love triangles- purely down to dramatic irony. Lia doesn't know that the two men she meets are an assassin and a prince- she thinks they are a fisherman and a trader. So although we know that, she doesn't, meaning that whilst she's working her feelings out, we are also working out our feelings towards the two guys and trying to come up with our own theories. I don't know if my point makes sense but all I'm trying to say is that it's not a simple love triangle because they're not simple people- meaning it's down to more than just who Lia decides she prefers. So, yes, I would personally say don't let the label of "love triangle" put you off because it's more complicated than that. :)

Overall I really enjoyed it and found it to be a fast read and it's also probably my favourite book of the year so far! Highly recommend! :) ...more

Really enjoyed this book. The writing was lovely, the plot was well laid out. Multiple perspective books are my favourites to read. Only taking away one star because I guessed who the prince was and who the assassin was right away.

Romance heavy, specially in the beginning..
Theres actually some potential with world building, but unfortunately romance is front and centre.
