মন্তব্য করাটা একটু কঠিন, মানে রাজনৈতিক বিশুদ্ধতা ধরে রাখা ত কঠিন বরাবরই।

চিনুয়া আচেবের সাধুবাদ প্রাপ্য - সেই সময়ে, সেই পরিস্থিতিতে আফ্রিকার উপর এমন একটা বই লেখার জন্য। এই বইয়ের ক্ষেত্রে অনেকে বলেন যে শাদারা নাকী নির্বোধ ইত্যাদি হিসেবে আবির্ভূত হইছে, আমার পড়ে সেইটা মনে হইলো না। বরং আচেবে কাউরে খুব বেশি কাঠগড়ায় না ঠেলে দিয়েই নিজের গল্প বলে চলে গেছেন। লেখার মাঝে মাঝে আফ্রিকায় প্রচলিত সব উপমা আর শব্দোবন্ধের দেদারসে ব্যবহারও দেখবার মতো।

সেই তিরিশ-এর দশকে আচেবে এবং তার মত বাকীরা এমন গুটিকয় লেখার মধ্য দিয়ে কীভাবে আফ্রিকান সাহিত্যের এক ধারা নিয়ে আসলেন - আফ্রিকাকে দেখার এক ধারা - সেই ফিরিস্তি অনেকের মুখস্ত হয়ে যাওয়ার কথা। আমি বলতেছি না যে আচেবে কেবল ভাগ্যের জোরে এরকম বই লিখছেন, ব্যাপারটা ভাগ্য বললে ত কত কিছুই ভাগ্য।

সমস্যা হচ্ছে, এ যেমন সত্য যে আচেবের এই উপন্যাস খুবই গুরূত্বপূর্ণ, তেমনি এইটাও আমার কাছে সত্য যে এই বইয়ের ওকোঙ্কো-র ব্যাপারে আমার বিন্দুমাত্র অনুভূতি তৈরী হয় নাই। পুরো বই জুড়ে কারো ব্যাপারেই পাঠকের কোনো দায় বা অনুভূতি উস্কে ওঠে না, চরিত্রগুলি বেঁচে থাকে, বিপদের শিকার হয়, বিপদ কাটায়ে ওঠে, খায়দায়, এবং শাদাদের আনা বিপদের শিকার হলে আর সোজা হয়ে দাঁড়াতে পারে না - এইগুলি আফ্রিকার বাস্তবতা, এবং এই বাস্তবতা তুলে আনার জন্য আচেবে সাহেবকে আমি শুরুতে সাধুবাদ দিয়ে এসেছি। এইসব আখ্যান আমরা এই বইয়ে ডকুমেন্টারী দেখবার মত করে দেখতে থাকি, আমরা ভাবি, এই তাহলে ছিলো জীবন, কিন্তু এরা এমন কিছু বলে না, এমন কিছু করে না, যখন আমরা বলবো, না না, হ্যাঁ হ্যাঁ, এই ত হওয়ার কথা ছিলো, বা স্রেফ প্রশ্ন ছুঁড়বো, কেনো? - নাহ্‌, ঘটে না আমারে বেঁধে ফেলার মত কিছুই, চার্চ পুড়ায়ে দিলেও আমার ভুরুতে পাক ধরে না, ওকোঙ্কো লাশ ফেলে দিলেও আমার পাতা নাচে না। আচেবে-সাহেব আমার কাছে যতখানি গুরূত্বপূর্ণ, ততখানি ভালো ঔপন্যাসিক নন, অন্তত এইখানে। ...more

Chinua Achebe’s fiction has played a central role in the processes of dismantling well-preserved prejudices, of ‘decolonisng the mind’ (to use Kenyan author Ngugi Wa Thiong’o's memorable phrase), of re-humanising the African people (the depressing necessity for such a process should remain a damning indictment against those who, by not acknowledging the humanity of others and acting accordingly, became inhuman themselves.) His novel, Things Fall Apart (1958), brought African literature to the fo Chinua Achebe’s fiction has played a central role in the processes of dismantling well-preserved prejudices, of ‘decolonisng the mind’ (to use Kenyan author Ngugi Wa Thiong’o's memorable phrase), of re-humanising the African people (the depressing necessity for such a process should remain a damning indictment against those who, by not acknowledging the humanity of others and acting accordingly, became inhuman themselves.) His novel, Things Fall Apart (1958), brought African literature to the fore and it is still one of the continent’s best-known and bestselling literary texts. This short novel details the rise and fall (and fall, and fall) of Okonkwo, a strong-minded but flawed man, intent on gaining power in the local Igbo community. Whilst his own selfish obstinacy and brutish disregard for others seem the main impediments getting in the way of the hallowed four titles within the tribe which he unerringly pursues, the reader begins to understand that the action of the novel is occurring at a time when outside forces of change are about to rend and rip the very fabric of Igbo society irreparably. Achebe was one of the first to reveal the psychological impact the appearance of Christian missionaries, followed on by the colonial governance of the British, had on the people whose land they were attempting to make their own. Things Fall Apart gives some idea of what it must have been like… to have your beliefs not only challenged but made a mockery of; to suddenly be forced to fall in line with a new, unknown regime; to be told that your way of life is foolish or shameful; to be considered backwards, bestial, not human.

These issues are now central to postcolonial literature and thousands of books from across the globe have been written around them but Things Fall Apart was one of the first and its power has not been diminished. I highly recommend reading it, or rereading it, as I did after hearing of Achebe’s death. Not only does it remain a gripping, harrowing read but one really gains a sense of its legacy, of the many millions of people it has inspired since its publication. It rightfully deserves its place as one of the greatest books of the Twentieth Century. Personally, I shall always remember the evening I was lucky enough to attend a poetry reading with Achebe, in a stuffed auditorium at the University of Leeds in 2010. Though the room was packed, no one dared move or make a noise. Attending were some of the most famous academics and authors in the field, yet all listened with a levelling reverence to the man whose work had, for so many, sparked the inspiration behind their own. ...more

There is a whole lot going on in this book. It's tough to critique.

To start off, I loved how Achebe dives into tribal culture with zeal and gusto, using native words and customs allowing context to fill in the blanks between your culture and theirs. The violence and misogyny, though difficult to read, felt authentic to the place and time and not imposed.

I enjoyed the twists and turns of the protagonist's journey to prestige and glory in the clan. The end, however, seemed to come out of nowhere ...more
