What is it with ships and intense chess matches. This might be the third book that I've read with this scenario.

The novel centers around the chess match between the Grandmaster Czentovic & a virtual unknown Mr.D who literally walks into the match out of curiosity.

But Mr.D has a past, and a unique circumstance, which forced him to become exceptionally adept in chess despite having no interest in it.

Oh, and the Nazis make a formidable presence in spirit. ...more
