As much as I enjoyed The City & the City, I felt this book was a little uneven and confusing. I get it that maybe aliens will have completely different ways to communicate than what we call language. That stuff was kind of interesting. But the narrative which seemed to recurse on a dystopian, apocalyptic scenario sort of dragged and felt redundant through the middle. This is the weirdest book I've ever read. Many people seem to dislike this book for this reason, but weird is fine by me.
I liked the main character very much. Avice is a very likable character, and the entire story is told from her point of view in a rather conversational manner at times as she'll jump around time mid thought just as we would if we were conversing with friends and suddenly remembered something else important -- or not so important -- to the conversation.
