Considered by many one of the greatest sci-fi books ever, this was a splendid read. I loved the idea of the strange bi-sexuality of the aliens who change sex periodically during periods of kemmer (see also Coming of Age in Karhide). Our protagonist has come to a somewhat primitive planet in order to try to win them to his Ekumen planetary association. There is a some great action here as we deal with a border struggle, a mad king, a death-defying trip across a glacier, the love that forms betwee ...more

Read in the French translation by Jean Bailhache.

Ursula K. Le Guin shares some genuinely original views about alternative family models and delivers some gorgeous depictions of a large-scale, coherent universe set mostly on the frozen rims of a backwater of a planet.

Tredje lesning gjorde jeg av savn, men fant til min store overraskelse a

Ursula Le Guin shines and shines. Humbling and generative. There are many passages in here I want to commit to memory. A book to come back to. (More comprehensive review on my site.)
