In short: I liked the research on Dejima, the islet off of Nagasaki through which Dutch merchants were allowed to trade with Japan. One notable exception: Christian literature and wares. The years are well chosen by David Mitchell, as Japan is still living under Sakoku ("closed country") policy (1603 to 1868) while the years future of the European enclave is in the balance, at the turn of the 19th century.
