This is a really cute book. I don't know why I say cute, but that is what I kept thinking as I was reading it. I know my daughter will enjoy it when she gets about 10 or 11 years old. There is a little violence that I would rather her not read under 10 years old. Mostly it is just threats but all the same....

The Veiled Truth was a quick easy read that I really enjoyed once I got my head wrapped around the idea that it is not in our own reality. This is a fantasy placed on an unnamed planet(could be Earth)where half the people are "magical," society is ruled by a royal family, and there seems to be no real continents just lots of islands. I am still a little confused by the cover. It is a beautiful cover that depicts a shrouded castle. The story opens at a farm and the only time we are teased with a castle is actually a dungeon. I suppose that could be what the cover is about?

It is well written which is always something I look for. I will look for more books from Andrea Rose Washington. I found maybe three tiny errors but that happens with huge publishing houses all the time. Yes I'm a bit OCD. :) The story flows really well and knowing that it is a fantasy/mystery for YA's made me feel like a teen again. (shy snicker)

Sasha is "non magical" (or is she?) but her BFF Cassie is "magical." They are like sisters so it was no surprise that Cassie was there when someone attacked the farm, burned her house down, and kidnapped her mother. Running into the night they had no idea where they were going. Sasha's mother gave her a book written in a secret language with directions to a "safe house." Having no idea who was waiting for her there the adventure she embarks sets her entire world upside down.

Now... the only reason I did not give it five stars. My belief is that every book should stand on its own. Have a beginning and an end. This story has a weak ending. It almost reads like a "cliff-hanger." This bothers me because it feels like blackmail, 'you only get to know the ending if you buy my next book.' I am not saying this is what is happening here, but I would have liked a stronger ending. This could have happened with an extra two pages at the end, a conversation and a plan for the future. Fabulous story that I would love to continue reading.

I am looking forward to the next installment though. :) ...more
