I really liked this book .. some parts were slow and predictable. It was romantic and epic just enough to make me excited to read. I even got a little teary eyed at some parts and I rarely cry in books. Although I did watch the last few min of Pitch Perfect 2 that same day and cried at the flashlight song ... So maybe my hormones are out of wack!

I knew I was in for a great read from the first sentence. The prologue was enticing, and it made me want to devour the book.
Khalid murders all his wives come dawn.
Sharhzad volunteers to marry him, and plans to murder him to avenge her best friend.
It was supposed to be easy, because he's evil, he's a monster, he's a murderer.
Nothing is ever easy.

This might be a retelling of 1001 Nights, but I honestly, it was more of a Beauty and the Beast retelling.
I had trouble getting into this at first. I didn't understand the connections and was only vaguely interested in the plot. But once Shazi got into the palace things got better.
The language is simply beautiful. The eloquence is just magnificent. It took me a while to actually believe the love story, but when it worked it WORKED! I would have liked a bit more epic with the romance, but still ...more
