Well, I didn't hate it. There is a lot of hype surrounding this book, hype undeserved. The premise of the story is interesting but nothing special. The first 230 pages were pretty good but after that things went downhill. I usually like to start off with the things I liked but for this book there were none.

Something that really needed improvement was the world building. Throughout the book the audience was given only small glimpses of the what the world is like and what the culture is. Ther 2.75

Well, I didn't hate it. There is a lot of hype surrounding this book, hype undeserved. The premise of the story is interesting but nothing special. The first 230 pages were pretty good but after that things went downhill. I usually like to start off with the things I liked but for this book there were none.

Something that really needed improvement was the world building. Throughout the book the audience was given only small glimpses of the what the world is like and what the culture is. There are a lot of references to the culture and beliefs, but those are never fully explained. The culture of the world seems pretty interesting and I want to know more, but there is no information on it. There is also many things going on outside of the main storyline that need more background information. Why is there a war going on? How did the war start? What is the belief system of these countries? The origin story of the world is a pretty important part of the book, but the explanation is very vague.

I also didn't enjoy the characters and the romance. The romance was superficial and surface-level. I didn't understand why the two characters were "in love" when they had no connection. The characters lacked personality and growth. They stayed one-dimensional the entirety of the book. They felt more like character tropes rather than actual characters with real personalities.

A big part of the book is figuring out who the assassin is and who the prince is. My guess was wrong, however, I felt that the personalities of the two love interests completely switched after the reveal. As if the author thought "Well I don't want the readers to be able to figure out who it is so I'm just going to switch the personalities to trip them up."

There's also too much "telling" in the story. The author tells the readers what is going on rather than showing them what happens. It takes away from the novel and is the main reason I felt no connection to this book. By just telling and not showing, the audience isn't able to feel anything and the romance falls flat.

The Kiss of Deception wasn't terrible. It was actually pretty fun to make fun of with my friends. It was a waste of my time though and I do wish I hadn't read it.

So, I really struggled with rating this book. Until around page 300 this was going to be a 2 star book. And I did like it more as the stakes were raised and it came to an end. However, that could only do so much to make up for the beginning. Now, a lot of people really like this book, so it appeals to some people. And even though I had quite a few issues I plan on continuing with the series.

My main complaint is that this book had so much potential and it went unrealized. I expected so many more So, I really struggled with rating this book. Until around page 300 this was going to be a 2 star book. And I did like it more as the stakes were raised and it came to an end. However, that could only do so much to make up for the beginning. Now, a lot of people really like this book, so it appeals to some people. And even though I had quite a few issues I plan on continuing with the series.

Instead a huge chunk of the book is Lia forcing herself into relationships. And basically the whole story is driven by her desire for love/a boyfriend. I can respect that, but her decision ends up hurting a lot of people and it bothered me that she didn’t even think about that ahead of time.

And, for me, the world building was lacking. I’m still confused about the history of the world and how all the different countries interact. Then there’s the magic that isn’t explained clearly. I feel like Ms. Pearson is purposely keeping things close to the vest, but it made it hard for me to get fully invested in the story.

Then, there’s the romantic elements. There’s supposed to be this love triangle, but it seemed like Lia just wanted a relationship, so she went after both guys. You know if you throw enough darts one is bound to hit. And I just don’t believe she has strong romantic feelings for either Kaden or Rafe.

I did like the idea of not knowing if Kaden or Rafe were the Prince or Assassin. For a huge part of the book that mystery is what kept me reading. Although, I did figure out who was who pretty early on.

The book really picked up for me when the secret came out. Things felt more intense and dangerous. Plus, not everything was about romance. If the series continues with the tone of the end of this book I’m hopeful I will enjoy it.

Like I said earlier I do plan on continuing to read the series, but I’m glad I got this from the library. And when the next book comes out I’ll probably get that from the library, too.

Mixed feeling with this one

As I said I lost interest after the major plot twist happened and I was struggling at the end to finish the book because it is a little bit slow and it tends to drag on descriptions and I have a really hard time when it comes to read books like this because I'm always waiting for something exciting to happen and I don't care how deep the river is or which shade of green the grass was, but that's just me

This book😍😍 rereading this was such a delight. I was switching between the audiobook and the physical book, and the audio is brilliant! I loved this so much more than the first time I read it and I’m so glad that I decided to reread book 1 before reading book 2! Can’t wait for what comes next ! (Yes I said that 4 years ago, but this time I actually have books 2&3 on my shelves... 🥰)
