Wow. I had heard such good things about The Kiss of Deception and it certainly did not disappoint. I loved everything about it. The setting, the characters, the mystery and the plot all worked so impressively to create a story that completely sucks you in and has you enamored from the first page. It's rare to find a book where every element just works the way it does here. I was constantly impressed with the writing and the twists and turns the story took and how I found it nearly impossible to Wow. I had heard such good things about The Kiss of Deception and it certainly did not disappoint. I loved everything about it. The setting, the characters, the mystery and the plot all worked so impressively to create a story that completely sucks you in and has you enamored from the first page. It's rare to find a book where every element just works the way it does here. I was constantly impressed with the writing and the twists and turns the story took and how I found it nearly impossible to predict what would happen. If you love fantasy you need to pick up this book right away.

I'll start off my ramblings by talking about how much I loved our main heroine, Lia. I knew from the very beginning when she decided to run away from an arranged marriage and life as a royal to live as a waitress earning her own way in a small town that I would adore Lia. She was strong willed, brilliant and always hopeful. She goes through hell in this book but she still keeps fighting, she never gives up, she never lays down and does what is expected of her. She also had believable flaws but she was never whiny or annoying to me. She was a loyal friend to Pauline, who I also loved.

Now onto the boys. Kaden and Rafe. One the prince Lia ran away from, the other an assassin sent to kill her. Which one is which? Well you don't find out for a long time. When Lia meets them both in the town she runs away to, she thinks they're both just travelers passing through. A farmer and a trader. But through shifting points of view we know better. The mystery here is done masterfully. I truly had no idea which was which. I had some ideas in beginning which I was constantly questioning and turned out to be totally wrong anyway. I thought eventually the clues would pile up and I would be able to figure it out before the big reveal but I was dead wrong. Every action taken by Kaden and Rafe makes you question, is that something a prince would do or know? Or is it more characteristic of an assassin? Both characters are developed well enough as individuals that they cannot be put into simple labels anyway.

I know it seems from the description and mystery between the two boys that there would be a love triangle here. I suppose in some ways there is one, but Lia's affections really only lean towards one of the men. Whether he is the assassin or the prince, that's for you to find out. Really the story could have taken either route and both would be equally intriguing. I wouldn't go so far as to say there isn't a love triangle but it definitely isn't as prevalent as you might think. Throughout the book Lia is sure who really has her heart. And I really enjoyed that, how the romance was handled.

I also loved how real all the secondary characters felt. They were all great. Even the ones you really want to punch in the head. There are some elements to the plot and Lia's possible psychic gifts that I'm not sure where Pearson is going with. It's kind of a subplot throughout the novel but hopefully will be expanded upon in the future. If I had any complaints it was that I found the beginning of the book a little more exciting that I'd say the last fourth or so. It almost felt like a totally different kind of story at that point. It definitely takes a turn. But it still held my interest enough to push through the bits of the story that maybe weren't as exciting. As far as first books in a fantasy series go, this definitely isn't very slow paced or riddled with insane amounts of world building. I thought it was woven in very nicely so it didn't feel like you were getting loaded with need to know information.

So yea wow I'll stop typing now. I cant wait to see where this story goes from here. Go pick it up if you haven't, the hardcover is so gorgeous I could just stare at it all day probably. Oh and (view spoiler) ;) ...more

I loved this story. I liked the way Lia always stood her ground and was resilient. As for the Assissin and the Prince, they were very interesting. They both had hardships they had to over come which added to their mysterious character. I also loved the secondary characters, such as Lia's best friend and the Assassin's companions. Every character had layers. Even the world was intriguing, the creatures and beliefs in this fantasy world was crafted beautifully. I really need to know what lies in f ...more

Such a mind blowing plot twist I nearly reread half the book to think straight afterwards.

Just a hint of advice to the brave people who want to start reading this. Have a shit load of tissues, a sound proof room, and a clear head, because there is so much (excuse me French) mind fuckery in this book that by the end you WILL be brain dead.
