Lia escapes from a future she doesn't want, on her wedding day. She and her friend Pauline travel and find a place to stay and hopefully permanently. Lia and Pauline finally settled in a small village after days of travelling. The real fun starts when two mysterious and very different men show up and show an interest in her.

What I really loved about this book was the mystery of the identities of the two men. One of them is the assassin and the other is the prince. This book was told i

This was a pretty solid fantasy novel, and a good start to a series. The mystery behind who was who was done really well and kept me guessing. For a while I was convinced of a certain outcome, but there was one line that made me think otherwise, and that ended up being the case. I really loved Lia as our heroine. She was really well rounded and wonderfully fleshed out.

I really liked this book! The first half was a little slow but it definitely grabbed my attention in the second half and kept me reading! I was totally wrong about which guy was the assassin and which guy was the prince...love when a book is unpredictable! I really liked Lia as a character! Unlike a lot of female characters who start out weak and get tough throughout a book...Lia is tough, fearless, and kickass all the way through! Excited for the next book to come out!

This was my first book by Mary Pearson. Overall I enjoyed it, however, I felt like I wanted more things explained. It kept talking about a gift that she had but never fully explained the qualities of the gift. While I liked both male protagonists I never felt any chemistry between the characters so I'm hoping more builds up in book 2. The world is an interesting one where I'd like to see more of what goes on. My official rating is 3.5 stars. ...more

I wanted to like this book so much more than I did! The writing was beautiful, I loved Lia's personality, but I didn't like the lack of explanation for the magic system in this book. And the romance drove me absolutely nuts at some points.

Overall, there's a good chance I'll pick up the second book when it comes out.
