Oooo I liked this! It was really entertaining. I just can’t decide if I like Mare or not. I’ll elaborate on that later.

So Mare is a red. Reds do not have powers. They are not special. They are beneath the silvers.
Silvers are powerful. They are special. They are above the reds.

But you see, Mare here is even more special than the silvers. She’s a red, but she has powers. And when the silvers and Mare find out about her powers, that’s when things start to get really interesting.

This book had it's issues but it was fun and easy to read. Perfect for pulling me out of a months long reading slump! The hardcover was gifted to me years ago by my mother in law and I've lately been eyeing it. When our library funding was threatened, I went straight to Libby to find some audiobooks to listen to. While scanning the available now audiobooks, I saw Red Queen and thought now is the time!

I went into this book knowing many people had mixed feelings, and that most of the complaints were that it is very similar to other YA dystopians. And I agree. However, I still really enjoyed it, for the most part.

I think the best way to describe this book is The Hunger Games (as well as a few other YAD's but mostly THG) mixed with Game of Thrones (since there is a sort of fantasy aspect, and a co *3.75*

I went into this book knowing many people had mixed feelings, and that most of the complaints were that it is very similar to other YA dystopians. And I agree. However, I still really enjoyed it, for the most part.

I think the best way to describe this book is The Hunger Games (as well as a few other YAD's but mostly THG) mixed with Game of Thrones (since there is a sort of fantasy aspect, and a court with different houses). I haven't read Game of Thrones, only watched the show, so that's what I'm basing it off of.

A lot of the Hunger Games similarities come from the characters themselves: Mare is very Katniss-y, Kilorn is very Gale-y (although I didn't love him like I do Gale), and so on. The events however were more similar to what goes on in Catching Fire, the first half, especially with the Katniss/Mare similarities.

This book is set in a world where people with Silver blood have abilities, and therefore rule over those with Red blood who have none. Our main character finds out that she, however, is special, and has an ability despite her red blood.

I thought from the first page, the story was really well paced. You get a lot of action right from the start and it continues through most of the book. I also really loved the writing. Victoria Aveyard is a good writer, even if she may have some plot things to work on, and I'm excited to see how she improves throughout this series.

I didn't find the characters to be anything special, but I didn't hate them either. I enjoyed Mare's sass and her decisions really did make sense. I found Queen Elara to be really intriguing, just because she was so damn awful. She reminded me so much of Cersei Lannister.

As for the romances in the story . . . I didn't really get it. Obviously I could see the direction it was going in, but there was never any build up between any of the relationships formed. It was kind of just tossed in there at random parts to the point where it was pretty pointless. I especially wanted something more between Cal and Mare, because I just??? There was nothing, and then something kind of??? I can't get into it without spoiling things, but it definitely needed some work or simply be cut out until the next book (which would have been wonderful).

Something else Aveyard needs to work on is her amount of foreshadowing. While I will admit she kept me somewhat guessing as to where the story was going to go, (or more so hoping for what I thought was going to happen to not because I really didn't want it to) I sort of just knew what would happen, and I was right.

Despite it's flaws, though, I was really interested in the story and didn't want to put the book down. I felt enough for the characters that I was rooting for them, and I'm very interested to see where the next book goes. ...more

When I heard about this book and that it was fantasy and the characters possessed superhuman abilities I ran to the store and bought a copy. How could I not love this?! Well...I didn't.

Red Queen was a book that I had such high hopes for. It was one of my most anticipated reads and when I finally got around to it I was excited to see what debut author Victoria Aveyard had in store for this series. To put it lightly, I was very disappointed.

Well, that was a wild ride! And I very much enjoyed (almost) every moment of it. While the sorry dragged a bit at the end, and I still have some questions (mostly regarding Cal's mother) I really really liked this story (and have ordered and preordered the second and third books). There were lies and betrayals and everything was so interesting! This one's definitely got me wanting to read more fantasy.

It was just OK, when I first read it I was enjoying it but somewhere I got lost and couldn't find my way back its a shame because this book did get good reviews just 3 stars for me

Awesome story...I want silver blood someday! Mare is a kick-ass protagonist and I loved her fighting spirit!!! The twists and surprises at the end has me excited for the next book...definitely interested to see where the story goes from here!
