I really wish I picked this book up sooner. This book was a bit of a surprise for me, even though I gravitate more to fantasy and it rarely lets me down.

The one thing that stands out the most in this book and series, so far, is that even though its YA, Cinda William Chima doesn't throw an obvious romance or love triangle between the main characters; though there is a fling that does affect the overall story. First read of 2014! What a great way to start a new reading year. The Demon King is the first book in a YA fantasy series that follows the lives of two people, Han Alister and Princess Raisa. I don't even know if I can give a proper summary, but it's an excellent read. There's wizards and betrayal and parties and fights and all that good stuff. I loved both Raisa and Han, they're so different and give two unique perspectives that connect in such unexpected ways. Raisa is so opinionated and heads First read of 2014! I loved both Raisa and Han, they're so different and give two unique perspectives that connect in such unexpected ways. Raisa is so opinionated and headstrong, I absolutely adored her, and Han is a fantastic mix of this former streetlord who has probably done awful things and someone who genuinely is a good person and wants to do better and make an honest living. There are some twists in the story that I didn't see coming at all. It also has a great cast of secondary characters including a corporal with a soft spot for the Princess and some questionable wizards. Overall this book was fun, addicting and exciting. The writing is very to the point, she doesn't go on for a page and a half describing how things look, which I appreciated. It's a great set up for the rest of the series. If you like fantasy novels you need to pick this one up. One thing I did wish is that it came with a map, but that's just me. Spoiler time!

More like 4.5/5 stars. It took some time to get into the meat of the story, but after that I ADORED IT. Court intrigue + mystery + magic + love pentagrams/hexagons: who wouldn't love it?

Can't wait to pick up the second instalment... which is right now because I have no self-control whatsoever. ...more
