Stunning! The characters are still with me. This is a beautifully and masterfully woven story of people from France and Germany told from childhood through late adulthood. Children who aged exponentially through WW2 yet retained some of their pure hearts and minds, some of their imagination and hope. When finally their paths cross there is a poignant sadness, pleasure and closure in each life. The author gave such an honest look at the struggles to choose good in the midst of war, to choose hope and beauty even after choosing the bad. Humans are capable of such resilience. Anthony Doerr well deserved the Pulitzer for this novel.
