[close] “Girl at War” by Sara Novic was a Goodreads giveaway novel I won. The story was simply gripping. I was absorbed into Ana's very self and lived her life through childhood in Croatia, the genocide, life as a young adult in America and back home again. This was a beautifully intimate and piercing look into the heart and mind of a child growing up in a war torn, hate filled land. My only criticism was that it ended very abruptly. I thumbed through the acknowledgments thinking perhaps the last chapter had been misplaced in the book. While I don't need a book to be tied up with a “happily every after” ribbon, closure is necessary. Because of that I'm giving “Girl at War” 4 stars.
