Before you question the rating, allow me to explain the reason as to why I did not like the story. "The Lottery" by Shirley Jackson is about a small village of about 300 inhabitants and every "morning on June 27th" (71) they gather in the center square to perform some sort of old custom the village has. This ritual they take part in consists of a black box holding slips of paper with names of all the families being held within this container. When reading the short story “The Lottery” by Shirley Jackson its can easily help us as a reminder of where these famous authors from books like Divergent and The Hunger Games get their ideas. After reading this book it makes me feel like Shirley Jackson was the original young adult author. Shirley Jackson shows how a good mystery triller should be written wrapping us in her tale human wickedness.

The story’s setting is an a contemporary America wire villages across the country a gathering for the annual lottery. The lottery which the author decides to keep it hidden until the end for added suspense. People of all ages gather in the town square of the village where the lottery master keeps a block box full of paper chips. One of these special paper chips is marked with a special mark to identify the winner. Not everybody is gonna draw but only the head of a house hold. In the story husbands are viewed and the head of the household and if the husband is missing then the head of a household is the male son above age of 16. If not then the wife is, thought before she will be question publicly if whether she has a son that can do the lottery for her not. Everybody in the crowd is excited expect the person who won the lottery. Since now that person has to accept the price for winning. Now even though she is not happy, everybody else is. Since the are happy with relief that they did not win the prize. Which sadly to say, its a awful price for anybody to win. The prize being that the winner gets stoned to death. Nobody tries to save them because if its not them being stones its good since they’re just following traditions.
Another subject that this story reminds me is how many people are very ignorant and follow tradition just because other people believe them or it was passed by their parents. People like radical islamics that believe it should kill because the qu’ran says so even though they're are not basis or fact to push that reasoning specially in the 21st century. I can conclude that this story was way ahead of his time and was magnificent. ...more
