The tale of Macbeth is a classic story, written by Shakespeare that showcases the highs and lows of human nature. The story takes place in Scotland under the rule of King Duncan. Macbeth, the main character, is a general in the King’s army and the Thane of Glamis. Though the play was written in the 1600’s, the underlying message is something to which we can all relate. Within each of us is the capability to perform wonderful acts as well as commit terrible acts. Within each of us is the capability to perform wonderful acts as well as commit terrible acts. Macbeth moved from one end of the spectrum to the other, exhibiting noble and heroic behavior initially, but due to a blindingly ambitious nature committed unforgivable acts.

The story begins with Macbeth portrayed as a hero. However, he receives a message from witches that tickles his ears. They predict that he will become Thane once more and then King. Excited about this prospect, he writes to his wife, informing her of the potential good news. After Macbeth does become Thane of Cawdor, he takes it upon himself to secure the Kingship. The initial plan was only to murder the King, however, to keep up appearances Macbeth determines other killings are necessary. Eventually, the actions of Macbeth and his wife lead to their own demise.

There exists within each of us the potential for good and bad. This internal struggle between good and evil has been a prevalent force in mankind’s history. Even though Macbeth was tempted, he had ample opportunity to change his course. After reading of the praise Macbeth received initially, it would be hard for one to comprehend how this individual could commit such acts. However, as we read through the story we can see how Macbeth took small but purposeful steps away from his previously honorable course. Why did he not immediately shun or rebuke the witches and their message? That could have been the end of the matter, but he was fascinated and intrigued with the idea of being King. Is this not where most immoral actions start? With our thoughts? Shakespeare’s Macbeth gives us much food for thought.

Through Macbeth we are able to observe human nature at its best and its worst. This serves as a reminder to us that we too have the potential to commit terrible wrongs. This knowledge can assist us in understanding the actions of others as well as ourselves. Additionally, it indirectly suggests that we should evaluate our own ambitions and what paths we have chosen to lead us to our destination. ...more
