Like Lydia, I'm also half-Chinese. However, growing up in the US I didn't experience anything like what the Lees feel. I understand small-town racial tension, but James Lee's insecurity, and the way his kids were teased in school, seemed a little too extreme. The beginning of this book was everything that made me put A Tree Grows in Brooklyn down after 150 pages, really slow with nothing exciting happening. I almost wanted to put it down too but I trudged on.
I'm glad I did. It was slow and I had a hard time paying attention at times but it dealt with things like racism and sexism. You got to see the seedy underbelly of a seemingly normal family (every family has secrets). ...more

This book had me turning the page, not only for the mystery, but for the family story as well. Each of the family members are so well developed in such a small amount of pages and you can't help but to feel something for each of them. The sadness and the truth of how a families small treatments of each other can have a lasting effect on the others is startling and yet something we all need to see.
