I love books that follow pieces of art or items through out history AND I love books about books---so when I saw this book at The Book Thing (check it out if you live in MD/VA!), I nabbed it. (Plus---the cover is so pretty--- hang my head in shame.)

This books tells the story of a haggadeh as it survived history--- and the persecution of Jews through out Europe. It is a little bit mystery, a little bit historical fiction. It is a page turner (will the book get out of Spain? Sarajevo? Venice?)...

I adore this book! History, mystery, drama, science, art, literature, and engaging characters... What's there not to love? I love the idea that an object can hide clues to the lives and history of its handlers, and that the clues are tiny fragments of particles that tell a rich story. The story spans centuries, with the past catching up to the future and the two finally colliding in the last chapter. I don't normally re-read books, but this is on my re-read list. ...more

Brooks fictionalizes the history of the Sarajevo Haggadah which came to light during the bombing in the war in Bosnia. It is written with two story lines, one contemporary and one historical. While I enjoyed the historical stuff immensely, I never grew to like ANY of the contemporary characters. This kind of made the reading tedious at times.

Not my favorite Brooks novel, but also not a bad read.

Wonderfully constructed book, chock-full of history, fascinating information about books, and a mystery. What made this book a 5-star choice, for me, was the love story and the recurring themes of loss and prejudice, eventually resolved in a satisfying resting place.
