Mixed feelings about the book. I liked the story, but found the book sometimes too long winded. It's written nicely and it is a nice read, but I have some difficulties to understand the hype about it.
The author thanks former authors at the end, among which Curzio Malaparte. I can only say the Malaparte's book is a monument compared to this ( in my opinion) ...more

This is a tough one for me to review. Reading over my highlights, I appreciate some of the wonderful language and descriptions. The idea of the book is wonderful. The characters, the radios and how it all tied in at the end. There are many ideas to think about. Doing what is right. How do you deal with witnessing atrocities? Who is the strongest, who is the weakest (Frederick could be seen as both).
The magical stone was neat as well, and brings to mind the power of greed, wanting to liv ...more
