Like a piece of classical music that begins slowly, scale upon scale upon scale, beautiful and steady, but by no means dangerous, thrilling or even emotional, the first half of the book is almost technical in its detachment. So incredibly beautiful, I don't even have the words to describe what this reading meant to me. So many feels! (Why does it always happens with 5-star readings? Oh, well.) ...more

Amazingly evocative book - until the last 30 pages or so and then it just seemed to lose its magic.

Well written and and moved quickly, but seemed a little light for a book set in WWII, not sure how to explain how slight the book felt despite being long and dealing with serious themes. Also every author should just delete their epilogue before publishing. Otherwise lovely.

I thought this book had a slow start, but I am so glad I stuck with it to the end. This is a great book club book as there are a variety of things to talk about. I loved that some of the chapters were only 2 pages, easy to pick up and read a quick chapter or two.
