This should have been a better book than it was. The author goes into a lot of detail about zoo management and animal science, which is interesting, but, all the asides to mostly unrelated facts makes this less of a book about human endurance and compassion during terrible times, and more of a zoological text book at times.

I learned a lot from this book. Insights into a time of terror and horror. This is a true story. It read a lot like a research paper, but was very fascinating.
Disappointed. Only pushed through so I could use it towards my reading challenge! Very slow, text book details about the animals and historically accurate but those details overshadowed the human story.
Read for book club. Well written story about a family, the zoo, a group of people working together to help each other and some interesting animals. I would love to see the movie to see how it compares.
