I liked it, but it was really sweet more than thrilling or mysterious. I prefer my mysteries a bit darker and more suspenseful but this one wasn't bad and did have some twists and turns that kept me guessing.

I chose this series because it takes place in Quebec and I have an affinity for that region of Canada...esepcially since it is outside Montreal and Quebec City.
A cozy mystery....which I am not sure what that signifies, but for this book I feel like it means a SLOW mystery. Armand Gamache heads to a small village to find out who has shot an eldery lady with an arrow....and in his investigation explores this small town and its relationships and secrets: a cousin who only cares about appearances, ...more

A Quebecer is shot dead with a bow and arrow and Inspector Gamache is sent to the hamlet of Three Pines to solve the crime. This is a somewhat slow-paced modern cozy, with nothing too gruesome.
I enjoyed this first novel in the Chief Inspector Gamache series. I will continue with the other books and hope that they get even better. I loved the setting, the eclectic characters, and the tension between some of the investigators. I look forward to their continued character development.

This was a character focused mystery that moved at a fairly slow pace until the end. I thought the case was given away early in the novel but there was of course a twist. I thought this was an unusual case and I liked the introduction of the main inspector. I thought some of the characters were not well drawn -- the young police officer on her first case for example. I will definitely read others in the series to see how it takes shape.
