I loved this book. I know a lot of people walk around sporting huge book boners for Ian McEwan and after my first McEwan novel (Saturday) I didn't get it, because that one was a bit lame in my opinion. Of course after I read it, I had about a million people tell me that it was a bad one to start with, but what can you do? The point being I wasn't expecting to be completely bowled over by this one, but I was.

Beautifully written, but such a bummer I had to quit reading about halfway through. I skimmed through the middle part (war scenes) and read closely the last 70 or so pages.
The characters are vivid and the story really draws you in --the book received loads of critical acclaim and rightly so. A good choice if you don't mind a liberal dose of betrayal, guilt, and heartbreak. ...more

I rather enjoyed this psychological suspense novel. A domestic crisis becomes a crime story and changes the lives of a middle class family in 1935 England. The ramifications go clear into World War Two. I enjoyed the narrative and would definitely consider reading another novel by McEwan. Just a bit of language and smut.
