“Going outside is highly overrated.”
Virtual Reality has been the stuff of science fiction for a long time. Simulated worlds, offering everything that real life simply can’t. And as a society that is closer to achieving the immersion into these worlds than ever before, I think the idea of exploring these virtual worlds is more important than ever.
Not only do I find the idea behind virtual reality so fascinating, but honestly, I am slightly in love with anything that is fully dystopian ready. And ...more

To be blunt, this is a book for those who happily and unabashedly identify as nerds.
For every 80s kid who grew up playing in arcades and watching John Hughes' movies, who memorized lines to Monty Python and feverishly wished to own the DeLorean, who stayed up all hours of the night enthralled with computer games and know the movie reference for Falken's maze...this book was written specifically for you. I found myself laughing out loud at each reference from a beloved game, movie, or song from ...more

I'm waffling between 3 and 4 stars right now so I think I'll land on 3.5.
When I first read this book I rated it 5 stars. I wasn't writing reviews back then but if I had I would have said something like ,"A geeky entertaining read."
I'd read 1 star reviews and keep to my 5 star rating.
I can now see where they're coming from.
So, I'm docking stars based on feelings from the below reread update and some others. Other reasons like the amount of '80s references. I was a fan of it the first time around ...more

Two stars. It was okay.
I thought this was going to be a fun book, but it ended up being boring and long-winded. I appreciate that it had a lot of action, however, it got tedious when I kept having to read summaries and walk-throughs of the main dude playing video games. A lot of climactic parts involved him playing video games and beating them--imo, that's not very exciting to read. Also, I simply didn't like the writing of this book--a lot of telling when showing would have been more powerful. ...more

Not a book I would normally pick up and read - but with all the buzz about the movie (coming out in spring of 2018) I thought I'd give it a try. So glad I did - loved all the 80's references to pop culture! Great story line and I really cared about the characters (and disliked a few too!). Now I can't wait to see the movie!

I loved this book. What a fun listen - Will Wheaton was great. Story of the quest for the golden egg. Video games, 80's references and fun characters, really what is not to love?
