The year is 2044 and reality is a terrible place to be. Most people during this time are spending their hours in a place called the Oasis. The Oasis is a virtual interface world that acts similar to a virtual reality with avatars and quests to gain items and coin to advance levels. The book begins when the creator of the Oasis has passed away and has decided to leave his fortune to a lucky user of the Oasis. The catch? The creator left puzzles throughout the virtual world to lead to the fortune

I'm waffling between 3 and 4 stars right now so I think I'll land on 3.5.
When I first read this book I rated it 5 stars. I wasn't writing reviews back then but if I had I would have said something like ,"A geeky entertaining read."
I'd read 1 star reviews and keep to my 5 star rating.
I can now see where they're coming from.
So, I'm docking stars based on feelings from the below reread update and some others. Other reasons like the amount of '80s references. I was a fan of it the first time around ...more

I don't ever read sci fi, but this book was enough to make me consider it. Ready Player One had me rapt with attention from beginning to end. I cannot recommend this enough!

By 2045, this world has become a pretty crummy place to live. As a result, the majority of the population spends its time connected to a virtual world known as the Oasis. The protagonist, Wade, spends his days holed up in his tiny hideout in order to stay connected to the Oasis, which has essentially replaced the real world for him.
When James Halliday, the reclusive creator of the Oasis, dies with no heirs, his multi-billion dollar fortune is left up for grabs. In order to claim the prize, one ...more

For a debut novel, this is GREAT! It was addicting and exciting like a video game! I would love to see this in big screen. If you were a teenager in the 80s then you would love this even more! Pac-Man, Evangelion, Knight Rider, Ultraman, Gundam, John Huhges' movies were the only things familiar with me but nonetheless reading this was a great experience! I love love the characters especially Wade and his friend Aech. Everybody should read this!

This is an awesome read!
I finished the book in 2 days. Couldn't stop reading it. I was born in 1983, and I'm not an 80s buff (or even a fan), but found the book to be so incredibly creative and the author so clearly exuberant that it was a pleasure to read. I can imagine, for people born in 1972 (the year Halliday was born), this book is pure nostalgia. Yes, it's uber-geeky, but even if you're not a geek or a video game fanatic or have every line of every classic 80s movie nailed down, you will ...more

Not a book I would normally pick up and read - but with all the buzz about the movie (coming out in spring of 2018) I thought I'd give it a try. So glad I did - loved all the 80's references to pop culture! Great story line and I really cared about the characters (and disliked a few too!). Now I can't wait to see the movie!

I loved this book. What a fun listen - Will Wheaton was great. Story of the quest for the golden egg. Video games, 80's references and fun characters, really what is not to love?

This was the best book. It was original and it had a lot of heart.
