Super fun book with more 80s pop culture references per capita than just about anything else! Loved it! I love how all the references help propel the story while also feeling like a game in itself. While the book explains references it needs to for the story's sake, more of them are left unexplained leaving the reader responsible for knowing them or looking them up. Considering I know the least about video games, I was most proud of the references I did get. Now, I have a whole batch of great 80

By 2045, this world has become a pretty crummy place to live. As a result, the majority of the population spends its time connected to a virtual world known as the Oasis. The protagonist, Wade, spends his days holed up in his tiny hideout in order to stay connected to the Oasis, which has essentially replaced the real world for him.
When James Halliday, the reclusive creator of the Oasis, dies with no heirs, his multi-billion dollar fortune is left up for grabs. In order to claim the prize, one ...more

This is an awesome read!
I finished the book in 2 days. Couldn't stop reading it. I was born in 1983, and I'm not an 80s buff (or even a fan), but found the book to be so incredibly creative and the author so clearly exuberant that it was a pleasure to read. I can imagine, for people born in 1972 (the year Halliday was born), this book is pure nostalgia. Yes, it's uber-geeky, but even if you're not a geek or a video game fanatic or have every line of every classic 80s movie nailed down, you will ...more

I'm usually not a fan of these types of books that are almost sci-fi. But I'd read so many positive reviews I finally decided to have a go. And I'm glad I did! It was very interesting and fun, and nostalgic!

I think this will be a great movie but the video game details were just sooo boring to me. I can see how people would be into all the 80s pop culture, but growing up in the 90s/00s, it was just kind of lost on me. Excited to see the movie though because I think it might be the rare example of the movie > book.
