Update March #2018.
About a year after finding this jewel, watching the TV series several times and having got to volume 3 in the series, only because I am treasuring the rest of the books so much, all of them in my Kindle already, awaiting the right moment to release the enormous pleasure of the experience, I find myself attempting to convince my "real life" book group to give it a chance, and it was rejected. . . because it is more than 800 pages long! I have started to think I am in the wrong Update March #2018.
About a year after finding this jewel, watching the TV series several times and having got to volume 3 in the series, only because I am treasuring the rest of the books so much, all of them in my Kindle already, awaiting the right moment to release the enormous pleasure of the experience, I find myself attempting to convince my "real life" book group to give it a chance, and it was rejected. . . because it is more than 800 pages long! I have started to think I am in the wrong book group.

In the mean time, I keep buying it in paperback for friends who never warmed up to kindle and they say they will love me forever for introducing them to Jamie Fraser.

Wow! That was amazing. I am a complete convert and as soon as I finished it I've immediately gone straight to Amazon to download the whole series into my kindle (which, by the way, is a small fortune, but also tremendous value for money, as each book is about 800+ pages and if Outlander is a taste of the whole series, it is first class entertainment too!).

This genre-defying story had been on my kindle for a couple of years and it had been greatly recommended by several GRs friends. My sister was pestering me about the TV series, but I definitely wanted to try the books first, and what a good decision that was. I have slept very little over the weekend, completely glued to my kindle and I not able to stop.

There is something for anyone in this story: historical fiction, fantasy, romance, action, adventure, yes, even humour. . . and despite its length, for me there was not a dull moment from beginning to end. I loved both the dashing Jamie Fraser (what a great romantic hero he was, charming, courageous, stubborn and kind-hearted), and his Sassenach bride. Their adventures put me through the ringer more than once, specially towards the end, but now I am under a spell and I am going to jump into the next volume straight away! ...more

It took nearly a month to finish this book. It was good, but my eyes crossed a few times trying to understand the language, I got bored at some parts because everything is told down to the minute detail. I had to stop and look up words. A lot. I'm not a big fan of historical novels, either. Aside from all that, it's an interesting story line and I like Jamie.

I may read the rest of the series someday. ...more
