Easy to read and an easy favorite. This reminds me of "Enclave" and "The Hunger Games" and the movies "Pleasantville" and "The Truman Show". But this one is definitely better. Lowry used simple words and sentences but her words conveyed great emotions and memories. It was truly felt. My favorite scene is when the giver gave Jonas his favorite memory. People of all ages should read this :).

Now that I'm a little older, I understand this story for what it actually is: a cautionary tale. When I was little, I read this story and took everything at face value. I didn't care for the story when I was little, because it didn't make sense to me, in my perfect family-protected bubble. As the future becomes present, I think that many similarities with this book are coming to light and it's unnerving. I loved this book, once I reread it. I'm glad it's a classic.

Wow, what a great book! I read it in one day. Its a quick read and I couldn't put it down. I absolutely bawled throughout the last part of it. The sparse language and landscape of this world that Lowry has created somehow manages to draw a great deal of emotional response from the reader (at least it did from THIS reader!). Completely raw. I look forward to reading more in this series.
