I love this book. It is so much better and explains everything better than the movie. When Jonas is picked to be the Receiver of passed down memories from the Giver, an old man, he discovers that his community isn't perfect as he always thought. It's far from. Only the Receiver is allowed to have full emotions and experience full pain and pleasure in life. He or she gets this through memories only the Receiver experiences.
