I loved pieces of this book - but am not in love as a whole. I loved the first 1/4 of the story while Pi was telling the story of his childhood in India, and his exploration of religion. This was a beautiful, well-written story.
The story of cast-away Pi was not as engaging. I felt myself pushing and slogging through much of the story. I got much more interested again in the last 1/4 of the book. I think 3.5 stars would be more accurate than 3...the writing was well-done. The anecdotes were also ...more

Yann Martel, I think you're a genius. The beginning was slow for me, although it was a work of art throughout. Lots of symbolism and I'm left reassessing after reading. Left me wistful and hopeful and just glad that books like this exist. Read before watching the movie because words this eloquent can't ever be translated to screen. The four stars?
