Great little book! If my future children are readers, this is definitely one I'd like to set in front of them.

The main character, Stanley Yelnats, is wrongly accused of stealing a pair of sneakers. And when it comes right down to it, he's not all that surprised that something like that would have happened to him thanks to a generational curse that has affected his family going all the way back to a promise broken by his great-great grandfather. Through an unusual set of circumstances (call it d

WHY did I wait so long to read this?? I blame Shia LaBeouf and a movie I had no desire to see. But, listening to this on audio and pulling together all of the threads of this modern folk tale (at least I feel like that's what it most closely resembles), was delightful. ...more

This book deserves every award it's won. Stanley Yelnats is not a hero for the ages. He's an overweight, bullied kid whose life goes from bad to worse when he's wrongly convicted of theft and chooses to go to a "camp" rather than jail. Things aren't going well for Stanley Yelnats--and it's all because of his no-good, pig-stealing great-great-grandfather. His family has been under a curse ever since his grandfather forgot to follow through on a promise; and now Stanley is getting his share of the curse. Overweight and bullied, Stanley is falsely accused of stealing a valuable pair of sneakers and sent to Camp Green Lake to build character. Upon arriving he descovers that there's no lake and nothing is green. His days are spent ...more

"Stanley Yelnats is under a curse. A curse that began with his no-good-dirty-rotten-pig-stealing great-great-grandfather..."

An inventive and darkly humorous tale of crime, punishment and redemption.
