YA is not my usual thing, however my book club chose it, so I went with it. Holocaust is a subject I tend to avoid because, well, it is hard to read.
A piece of art. It's written beautifully with gorgeous descriptions of heart-wrenching scenes. It was not easy to read for a few reasons, including the heart-wrenching part. Also, the character of death (who narrates), likes to give away major spoilers about who will encounter hardship or die next. Who wants a favorite character to face danger or di ...more

This is an amazing book. After reading this I realized that I have been way too easy in my rating of other books. This is definitely a five star book that makes some of my other five-star books seem not very meritous of the rating I gave them. I loved the imagery and how the words felt almost woven together. What a story. It affected me to the core. I love the way it was written and the perspective it gave mr. It moved me and made me think . I would highly recommend this book.

Oh my goodness. I love it when a book moves me beyond words? This was one of those wonderful books that after I finished the last sentence, I just sat... and thought....and cried a little....and smiled a lot. I cannot gush enough about this book. The writing is vivid and spectacular. I fell in love with the characters- even Rosa Huberman.

Beautiful writing...beautiful story.... sad and haunting.
Don't read this if you are in the need of a pick-me-up.
The book is written by death....and takes place during the Holocaust. It concentrates on a girl who steals books, her foster parents, the Jew hiding in the basement and her best friend, a boy that wants her to kiss him.
Read it. Yup, do it....but don't expect to throw it in the give away pile immediately after finishing....you will be in a funk for a day. ...more

What a tremendous book. Zusak writes like a symphony, so incredibly poetic. If it weren't for the incredibly devastating backdrop, I would have wanted this book to go on forever. This isn't my usual read - The name caught me and I went for the ride not knowing much, but falling in love with every word written, every character. I feel richer for having read it. Thank You.
