2025 Reread
2025 me would not have picked up the second book. I remember immensely enjoying Books 2 and 3 in the series, so I will give the whole series a re-read again. Reading it 13 years after it was published, and in the era of Crescent City and Fourth Wing, it's plain to see how much the genre has evolved and how sophisticated, complex and action-driven those new worlds are in comparison to earlier romantasy book series. This is pretty formulaic YA, which I figured out within the first couple chapters. Nothing in this book really surprised me unfortunately. But the world was really interesting, and I wanted to read this before Six of Crows which most reviews seem to think is far superior. (Although I am DESPERATE to learn more about how being a Grisha actually works, how does a country split in half by shadows still function properly, what are the surrounding countries like? I thouroughly enjoyed this book. It is not an amazing, learn something, change your life book. It is a fun read and delivered on that. Can't wait to read the next in the series.
