The semi-stuffy tone of the beginning of the book--the tale did feel as if told, convincingly, by an academic-- picks up steam as it goes along. I thought the ending was classic gothic horror stuff--great fun. Occasionally overwritten, you still feel as if you were in another time and place, gathered around a fire, and hearing an unbelievable story of evil set loose in the world (cue manic laugh...)

it was a story that has great writing, great plot and great pacing. It was long but it was worth it. It took me a long time to finish it not because it was boring but because I had to stop every so often just to digest what happened. It was so mysterious and scary at the same time. About the best thing I can say about this book is that it's over. Which is a shame, because the first half of it was quite good. A young woman discovers her apparently widowed father has spent a good part of his life tracking down Dracula - the real historical one, Vlad the Impaler of Wallachia. He slowly begins to tell his daughter the story of his college advisor who was drawn into the hunt and of his relationship with the young Romanian woman who joined the quest.
