I almost wish I had never read this book because it is going to haunt me. But I feel oddly uplifted by it, which is just amazing considering how very brutal it is. Set in a state prison, focusing on the death row, it is both a harshly realistic yet also whimsically magical look at life (and death) in prison. The writing is beautifully done but it is filled with some of the ugliest things I have ever read. I equally hated it and loved it which is domething I have never felt about a book before. E ...more
