I am not sure what to say about this book, but I know it was beautiful and sad at the same time. It was not what I had expected but that was part of the beauty of it - I had never experienced anything like this before but this story impacted me on many levels! I adored the author's writing, the way she brought the characters and prison life alive on the pages.

Reading "The Enchanted" is like a slow descent into a bad dream. It was so difficult to read, yet so beautifully written. There is so much pain and brutality in this book; murder, rape, corruption, child abuse, extreme poverty. The subject matter is incredibly trying; yet there are moments of magic here, too. Rene Denfeld did a beautiful job of telling this story. I can't give it a 5-star rating because it was simply too uncomfortable to read.

This was a disturbing and difficult book to read. That said, it was beautifully written and it completely enveloped me. But it enveloped me in a world that I'd rather not visit.
