I find it interesting that most of the reviews for this book are so polarized (either Jody Picoult is the most wonderful author ever, or she writes complete and utter crap... I wonder why that last group bothers to read her books?)

This story is profoundly heart-wrenching and impossible to forget. Ms Picoult tackles a difficult subject matter - The Holocaust - as seen from the various perspectives of a Holocaust survivor, her granddaughter, a former German SS guard, as well as from a legal perspective. The story alternates between present day and past, but is beautifully written and easy to follow.
