What Members Thought

This book was quite the page-turner and definitely one of Ms Picoult's best (and I've read 12 of her 19 other novels). Each chapter is alternately written in one of the 5 main characters' voices to give the reader an intimate view of what makes them tick. This writing style works so well for Jacob, the protagonist and the boy afflicted with Asperger's, to gain a better understanding for the unconventional thoughts and actions that someone living with this flavor of autism embodies.

First I need to get something out of the way. When I finished this book, I was furious and upset. Why? Because Picoult doesn't end the story. Well she does, because there weren't any more pages, but she didn't tell us what happened. I won't lie, I screamed at this book for 30 minutes making my throat hurt. I yelled, "I'm SO upset! What kind of person writes a book without an ending?!? I'm so furious! Mom! I'm writing this woman a letter!" And that's how it went, and guys, I'm not crazy. Haha, I

Okay - So like I finished the book last night after midnight. I was not going to sleep until the book was done.
Several thoughts. I must start out with the fact I enjoyed the book or I would have gone to bed a whole lot earlier. Also as always, I enjoy the way Jodi Picoult draws us into a world with the variety of voices of the characters.

First, Jodi did it again. God, she is incredible. Her autistic voice forced the reader to understand and think like a child with autism. To see the world through the eyes of another in this context forces one to fall in love with the autistic and feel as they feel. Her extensive research to write a book of this caliber shines through with each chapter. Jodi, you are still my hero.

I enjoyed the book, but wasn't a fan of the ending. In my mind it left it a little open-ended. However, I really enjoyed some of the characters in this book. The lead female was tougher than the lead characters in some of Jodi's other novels. I also love Oliver the lawyer. He had a great personality.

I'm a huge Picoult fan, but this is not one of my favorites. Picoult seems to force the characters and plot, and there's a lot of down time with little action to help it along.
