I read this shortly after my daughter was born and it was such a powerful experience. Unconditional Parenting caused me to rethink my most basic expectations of how to parent. Though I knew I didn’t want to punish my daughter as I had been punished, I had not considered the damage of a practice such as time outs, nor had I thought of the ways we control children through praise. I especially appreciated how Kohn cracked open the subject of what “works” by asking: “works to do what?”

I learned a lot from this book, and I agree with Alfie Kohn's message and hope to implement a lot of it as my daughter (now 13 months) gets older. His message is basically that using rewards and/or punishment to get our kids to behave the way we want them to is detrimental to their development as good people. It creates children who do things to get a reward or avoid punishment, not because it's the right thing to do. Instead, Kohn advocates teaching our children the reasoning behind doing good ...more

excellent. as memory serves, a bit heavy as parenting books go. one of the biggest take-aways was advice on praise and as a result, we virtually don't praise at all, but earnestly notice and comment without offering judgement. pretty essential reading, at least skimming. ...more

Saw the dvd to get a head start, and really enjoyed what he had to say. I zipped through the book, and I read it, and feel that it has/will certainly influence the words I choose to use with my child(ren). But I also see how people can really go overboard with the interpretation of this book, and maybe that's too bad. Kohn raised some great points, great things to consider and reflect upon. But I have a feeling that some people go a little nuts in their application of the ideas in the book.
